Thirty-three has one door
A birth number is a sum before it is a symbol: reduce the month, the day and the year, add the three, reduce once more — except that 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole instead. That one exception explains the rest.
Count the totals that can land on each answer. A nine arrives from five of them — 9, 18, 27, 36, 45 — because anything larger gets summed back down and keeps arriving. An eight arrives from six. But 33 arrives from exactly one: a total of 33 itself, since anything above it reduces to a single digit and never comes back up. Twenty-two has one door as well, and so, surprisingly, does two — eleven takes 29, 38 and 47 away from it, which is why 2 lands on 4.6% of birthdays while its neighbors sit near 11%.

And it does not spread out evenly
The 195 dates are not scattered across the years. Add up the digits of a birth year and reduce them, and that one number decides how many days of that whole year can produce a 33:
- Year comes to 22 — twenty-seven days will do it. The year has already supplied 22, so the month and day only need to make 11 between them, and there are twenty-seven ways to do that. 1957, 1966, 1975, 1984 and 1993 are years like this.
- Year comes to 11 — exactly two days, both in November: the 11th and the 29th.
- Year comes to 2 through 9 — one day, and it is always the 22nd of a single month, because the 22nd is the largest a day can be in this arithmetic and nothing smaller reaches. Years coming to 8 get two, March and December.
- Year comes to 1 — none at all. No date in such a year produces a 33, whatever month or day you were born.
So it is worth knowing which kind of year yours was. 1972 adds to 19, which comes to 1: nobody born that year carries a 33, and no birthday could have changed it.
The date made entirely of elevens
Look again at the second case. In a year whose digits come to 11, one of the two dates is the eleventh of November — month 11, day 11, year 11. Three elevens, and 11 + 11 + 11 is 33: the rarest number in the system, reached by the plainest-looking date on the calendar. It comes round every nine years. The last was 11 November 2018; the next is 11 November 2027.
