Which way should a wrist tattoo face?

It depends on who you want to read it. Inked to read for you, the number is upright when you turn your wrist up to look, and upside down for anyone across from you; inked to face out, it is the other way round. For six angel numbers the question never comes up — 000, 0000, 111, 1111, 818 and 888 read the same either way. Lettered like a digital clock, 222, 555, 2222 and 505 join them.

Which angel numbers read the same upside down?

Turning a number upside down reverses its order and turns every digit around. In ordinary type only 0, 1 and 8 come back as themselves, 6 and 9 become each other, and any other digit stops being a digit. Mathematicians call the numbers that survive this strobogrammatic and keep them as a list in the OEIS, sequence A000787; Angel Clock checked every angel number below against its rule. In the segments of a digital clock, 2 and 5 survive too — sequence A018846 — because each is symmetric around its center.

Most typefaces give the 1 a small flag at the top. Turned around, the flag lands at the bottom right; the digit still reads as a one, and the list counts it that way.

666 and 999

Upside down, 666 is 999 and 999 is 666, in any lettering: a 6 turned around is a 9. So a 999 inked to read for you reads 666 to the person across the table. 919 turns into 616 the same way, 911 into 116, and 1010 into 0101.

In a mirror

A mirror — and a mirror selfie — reverses the order and flips each digit left to right. In ordinary type 0, 1 and 8 come through, so the same six numbers look right: 000, 0000, 111, 1111, 818 and 888. On a digital clock a mirror also swaps 2 and 5, so 222 comes back as 555, 555 as 222, and 1515 as 2121.

A cursive 444

Is 999 upside down 666?
